Slow juicing – why you need to know about it

By Francesca Specter
High-speed juicing just went slow

There are many things in life that we benefit from doing slowly – eating, practising yoga, even thinking – but we never suspected that juicing, usually a high-speed affair, would be next on the list. Enter slow-juicing: a gentler approach to whizzing up your fruit, vegetables and superfood powders that is taking the wellbeing world by storm.

Rest assured, the ‘slow’ juicing process isn’t slow at all; it’s actually very efficient. What it does do differently to traditional high speed juicers is that, instead of using metal blades to generate heat to blitz your fresh fruit and veggies to a pulse, it recreates the ‘squeezing’ technique of a manual machine. This produces cold-pressed juices where all the vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, phytonutrients and enzymes in your juice remain intact – music to our ears.

Nor does the slow juicer possess less brawn than a traditional high-speed juicing machine: it can extract juice from everything, including hard fruits, vegetables and leafy greens. Plus, there’s no need to remove the skin from your produce, making it a miraculously hassle-free process.

Want to try this new healthy juicing trend for yourself? Smeg have provided us with three fabulous recipes from their Slow Juicing cookbook. For all three, all you need to do is pop the ingredients into your slow juicer, feed in the ingredients, then pour into a tall glass to enjoy. Simple!
