Going Against The Grain: fired-up by Firezza

Upon becoming gluten-free, one item of food I was keen to discover a good wheat-free alternative for was pizza (for obvious reasons). In the past few years I have tried many a variety, whether take-out, shop-bought, homemade or in a restaurant, and the results have ranged from inedible cardboard to rather enjoyable. But until recently, I still hadn’t come across that one to rule them all – until I discovered Firezza and my gluten-free pizza experience was transformed.

There is an additional £2 charge for a gf-base, but when it tastes as good as this and they don’t make the gluten-free bases smaller than normal size (yes, I’m looking at you, Pizza Express), it’s an annoyance, but not the end of the world. The crust is crispy and the base firm, just like good regular pizzas, but not to the extent that they are burnt or you can’t cut or bite into them. They taste absolutely divine, and even those I have forced the gf-option on upon ordering proclaim they can’t really taste much difference to ‘normal’ pizza and would happily eat this over a regular base.

Currently with branches all over London, and one in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Firezza offer a wide variety of toppings, from delicious veggie combos to meat feasts to satisfy all tastebuds. My favourite is the brand-named Firezza, which is a margherita base adorned with proscuitto, pepperoni, roasted aubergines, courgettes and sweet peppers; the meat is full of flavour and the vegetables succulent. If you can’t get to one in London or Kent (aside from takeaway you can also eat-in at many of their branches), the only thing I can suggest is that we kindly request they expand, and pronto – gluten-free or not, nobody should be missing out on these pizzas.
