Been having a daily stand-off with the rows of chocolatey bunnies, eggs and chickens that have been lurking around the supermarket tills since February? As the sugar addict‘s number one public holiday approaches, you’d need a will of iron to pass them up. But try.

Holding out for the main event is much more rewarding than scoffing a creme egg on the bus home. Almonds, on the other hand are ideal when you need a nibble. Here are nutritionist Lucy Jones’ top 4 reasons why.

1. 30g of almonds provides approximately 65 per cent of your daily requirement of vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect your cells from oxidative stress.

2. Heading to the gym or pounding the pavements? As a natural source of protein, a nutrient that aids muscle recovery, almonds are the perfect pre or post-workout snack.

3. Almonds are rich in calcium, which is needed for the maintenance of healthy bones and teeth.

4. Feeling worn-out? Almonds are a high source of magnesium, which contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue.

Paired with some tasty stuff, they’re also an easy way to hit your cravings for something sweet without needing to do back-to-back tabata classes to burn them off. Chocolate chilli, mocha or salted caramel take your fancy? Pick your favourite and get the recipes here.
