Take a holistic approach
Dr Gemma Newman (right) is a specialist interested in health, plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine. She believes that it’s vital to take a holistic approach to keep joints and muscles as pain free as possible. Here she shares how simple changes in your daily habits can make a big difference between being able to enjoy the Summer and feeling stuck in a rut.

DR GEMMA’S TOP TIPS

Healthy foods to enjoy in the sunshine
Study data shows healthy foods can really help reduce persistent joint and muscle pain. Foods rich in polyphenols, vitamins and minerals are the perfect choice to make you feel good this Summer.
Having the right building blocks for a healthy body and a fully functioning immune system is a wonderful way to feel empowered to greater health. Dr Gemma Newman’s website has lots of resources and cookbooks, and she’s a big fan of more plant-based meals, packed with fruit, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, to give you the perfect ingredients for reducing the risk of diabetes, heart disease and every day joint and muscle pain.

Get moving and get outside
Exercise will reduce joint pain and help combat fatigue. How? Well, exercise can strengthen the muscles around your joints and even help you maintain bone strength. Making new muscle fibres doesn’t just keep you strong, but it can also reduce your risk of dementia, improve your concentration and lift your mood. Movement is also important to help you maintain a healthy weight and get a good night’s sleep too. Your balance will worsen if you stay inactive over time, which increases risk of falls, long term.

How to move safely with joint and muscle pain
Keep the impact low to start with: exercise bikes, elliptical trainers and swimming can all help get you started by reducing the initial impact on your joints.
Temperature tips: heat treatments like a warm towel or a shower can improve blood flow before you begin and applying ice for 20 minutes or so following exercise can help – especially if you experience a flare up.
Go slow: exercise with slow and easy movements. If you feel pain, take a break. Sharp pain and pain that is stronger than your usual joint pain might indicate something is wrong. Slow down if you notice swelling or redness in your joints.
Exercise indoors: stand up every 15 minutes, or four times an hour. Walk between rooms of the house. Use baked bean tins as mini weights. Basically, use anything you can think of to keep those muscles moving. This will be vital to reduce risk of losing muscle mass and avoiding frailty. Your body is a heavy weight, so you can use that if you don’t want to buy dumbbells.
Stretching: stretching is a simple way of keeping muscles flexible and relieving joint stiffness. Whether you prefer to have a bit of a stretch in your living room every morning or actually follow a guided yoga or pilates routine is fully up to you.
Try Sigesbeckia: best taken daily and suitable for long term use. Sigesbeckia is a plant that that has been used for centuries in Oriental Medicine to combat pain in the joints and muscles, helping to minimise discomfort without the risk of side effects of the commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory pain relievers.

Keep your hobbies alive
Lift your spirits by trying new hobbies or maintaining the ones you used to have! Did you know that knitting or crocheting is beneficial for those suffering from joint inflammation.
