Research has found this herb to be as good as antidepressants like Prozac – we investigate its mood-boosting benefits
What is it?
St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the key herbs used by medical herbalists for treating depression*. In fact, in Germany – where it has been extensively studied – it’s one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. But, aside from its mood-boosting properties, St John’s wort can also help to ease a whole host of other health concerns; see right.
How do I use it?
St John’s wort is widely available in tablet and capsule form, as well as in tinctures. The herb is often blended with others such as passionflower, lemon balm and valerian to help with the anxiety that often accompanies depression.
How much do I need?
Always read the label as formulations may vary. While a large number of people safely enjoy the benefits of this herb, some people have reported mild gastrointestinal side effects while taking it.
What can it do for me?
A German review of research from 29 studies involving 5489 patients with mild to moderately severe depression found St John’s wort was as effective as standard antidepressants but with fewer side effects. It’s thought that the active constituent hypericin is responsible for the herb’s antidepressant action.
