Good news for married couples – psychologists say that marriage is really good for your health. Nearly 35,000 across 15 countries took part in the New Zealand study, which found husbands and wives are less likely to suffer depression and anxiety when they are together. Contrary to previous studies, tying the knot is beneficial to the mental health of both sexes, not just women. However, they also found you are more likely to suffer mental disorders if the marriage ends through separation, divorce or death. Women were more likely to resort to substance abuse and men were more likely to become depressed. The study, based on the World Mental Health surveys conducted over the past decade, also found that men are less likely to become depressed in their first marriage than women.
So ladies, next time you’re having a rant at your husband, remember that being married to him is actually good for your health!
